Trumbull’s Herbst: No pension for next governor

The heir to Dannel P. Malloy should have to make do with lodgings at the governor’s residence and a state trooper detail — but no pension — if Republican Tim Herbst has his druthers.

The Trumbull first selectman, now a declared candidate for governor, is calling on his potential rivals to forgo the traditional trappings that come with the state’s highest office.


Herbst wants to eliminate pensions for state legislators and to move all state agency heads and political appointees to a defined contribution plan such as a 401(k). Candidates for governor should also forgo contributions from lobbyists, Herbst said in a pledge he recently issued to Republicans and Democrats who are in the mix for 2018.
